Dearest Carrie, Alex and Emma,
Duarte and I are holding you close to our hearts and hope that these
few words I write can comfort you a little and fill you with precious memories
of your Mark. Duarte and I really wish we could have been lucky enough
to spend more timing getting to know Mark and the wonderful guy that he was.
Duarte would have loved to talk politics with him and we would have both
loved to hear about his remarkable work and travel adventures, and
experience his great sense of humour! We're grateful for all the huge
news stories that he brought to us through his tremendous, hard work
and talents.
We will be with you and all the family in thought and prayer when you celebrate Mark's life on Sept 28th, we are sorry that we can't be there in person.
With all our love and warmest sympathy,
Lara, Duarte, Charlie, Jackson & Louie XOXOXOXOXO

I worked with Mark many years ago at Canada Am, and was delighted to meet up with him again a while back in Georgeville, Quebec. As a fellow Nova Scotian, we always had a good laugh together, and I so enjoyed his spirit and sense of joy found even in the news business. I’m sure he is deeply missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Mark‘s passing. I knew him a little when he was a teenager. I remember him best at home with Naomi and Fleur. The air was always filled with warmth, welcome, and witty conversation. Mark, or Jol as I knew him, was generally very quiet, except for that one cutting remark that would cause gales of laughter. I haven’t seen him since those days but I was not surprised to read about the full, adventurous, and interesting life that he led. I know he will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with you all.

My daughter Lucy and I got to know Mark through her friendship with Emma and my friendship with Carrie . I didn't really know what he did for work, except that he worked behind the scenes to make news reporting happen, and often travelled to really interesting places and world events . It has been wonderful to read about how he supported his work colleagues and his pivotal role in this industry .
I will remember him primarily as Emma's Dad and Carrie's husband.
As Emma's Dad he supported her interests, challenged her to think outside the box, and to take risks. He was incredibly proud of her. As Carrie's husband, it was very obvious that he adored and cared deeply for her through his actions and words. With their hectic schedules they prioritized time with each other. They had so much fun and laughter together - and so much love. He was such a good, good man. I wish there had been more time for me to get to know him better. I'm thankful that I can say that I knew him.
For Naomi, I am so sad that you have lost your son . You are the person who encouraged his interests and provided him with opportunities to pursue his passions. You nurtured him and influenced him to be the kind, hard- working, caring and highly motivated person that he became! There is no name or term for a mother who loses a child. Perhaps that is because it's not the natural order of life. Losing a child of any age, is completely devastating.
Naomi, Carrie, Emma, Alex, Fleur and extended family, we offer you our most sincere condolences .
Kimberley and Lucy,
Grace, Abi and Charlie Smolenaars

I first met Mark sitting on the bleachers watching our sons play basketball together in grade 8, I always wondered why he was always on his phone, I had no idea what he did and didn’t realize he was working and doing important stuff! Covid hit, and Mark’s son Alex practically spent every weekend at my house, with “ the basement dwellers”, a group of friends navigating the new norm but staying connected with their steady group of 10. For high school graduation, the families of the “basement dwellers” all went to the Dominican together, to celebrate our children on March Break. This is when I got to KNOW Mark. What a wonderful week we had, and I appreciated Mark delivering beverages to us whenever he got one for himself, and his sense of humour. Our sons are very close, they worked together painting houses the summer of 2023, and it was my son’s turn to spend many nights in Mark and Carrie’s basement. My son Ryland appreciated Mark’s humour and intelligence. I once told Carrie after the trip “ I had clearly pegged Mark wrong”, and she replied “ He’s often underestimated”. In the short time we knew Mark, he certainly made his mark. We are still is shock of the news of his passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Carrie, Alex and Emma and the rest of his family. We hope you find comfort in stories, memories, and the impact he made on this planet. Much love, Dom, Matt, and Ryland.

My deepest condolences to Mark's family and friends. He was such a kind soul and helped me immensely in embracing a new chapter in my career as I navigated shooting my own stories in the brave new world of iphones. The way he embraced new technologies and challenges and changes in the industry was inspiring. He was always sending news gathering tips and videos and was always ready and willing to help. I will miss shopping for sugar free food and peanut butter in the field. I still cannot believe he shipped me two jars via Purolator. Oh wait, yes I can, cause that was Mark - thoughtful and brilliant beyond measure. The last time I saw him was in Saint John where I got to meet his son. What a fine young man just like his dad. He is greatly missed.

My heart goes out the many friends and loved ones who adored Mark. I only had the occasion to meet him once in my 1.5 years here at Global and he was such a gem of a human and powerhouse of a resource guy.
The many Blanchie stories I've heard are mindblowing and I'd said to him, I hope a book of his career exploits is planned when he retires. Maybe even a screenplay. Being so humble, he brushed it off like he's not the legend we all know him to be.
Tobacco down, prayers up for his journey to the spirt world where he'll undoubtedly be embraced by those who've gone before him.
Prayers of comfort too for those he leaves behind to grieve this immense loss.
