Joseph Jarvis

Obituary of Joseph Gifford Jarvis

Joseph Gifford Jarvis, 66, Weymouth Falls NS, passed away July 12, 2024, in Digby Hospital. Born December 23, 1957, in Digby he was the son of the late Gifford and Rose Jarvis.

Always willing to help, Joe gave much time within the community as well as to many organizations. He was a long-time, life member of the Legion, the PC party, as well as founding The Friends of the Sissiboo River Association. A proud member of many social clubs over the years, he made many friends, and if he met you once, he remembered you for a lifetime. He had a great memory for family and area history and with his passing, most of those memories are lost. Joe loved music, dancing as well as karaoke. He even had his own dance named after him at the Digby East Fish and Game! He had nicknames for everybody he knew. Too many to mention!

Joe was a journeyman carpenter but would turn his hand to whatever came along and was never long without work, be it security, carpentry, or fish plants. He really enjoyed his time at Innovative Fisheries and the people there. He always took pride in whatever he did. Although he never had much money, he managed to support many charities. He was a prolific letter writer. Most every MLA and MP heard from him regarding many issues.

“Joe was a survivor. In 2018, he was diagnosed with AL Amyloidosis and given less than a year. He made it many years beyond that.”

Joe is survived by brothers, Patrick Jarvis (Joanna) and Samuel Jarvis (Colleen); sisters, Elizabeth Carter (Patrick), Louise Kearsley, Monica Jarvis (Gerald), Laura Jarvis (Albert); many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents Joe was predeceased by his nieces Shana Carter and Sarah Hatfield and brother in-law James Kearsley.

Joe will be greatly missed by his family, community, friends and all who knew him. It was Joe’s wish for there to be no service, but instead, a celebration of life to be held at Weymouth Legion Branch 67. Date to be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Digby County Funeral Chapel, 367 Highway #303, Conway, NS B0V 1A0 (902-245-2444).
