Vernon Kane

Obituary of Vernon Frederick Kane

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and brother Vernon Fredrick Kane on September 7th, 2024 at the age of 81. He was the son of the late Mary (Grouse) Kane and the late Frank Alford Kane.

For 50 years, Vernon worked in construction as a member of the International Labourers Union. He was a sought after tradesman because of his impeccable work ethic, his expertise and his eye for detail. When he first retired, multiple construction companies tried to entice him to come back in any role of his choice, even management, yet he declined. However, inevitably, his youthful energy did bring him out of retirement and lead him back to his trade for another 3 years before he did finally retire for the 2nd time. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and pride can be seen by us all accross Nova Scotia. Just stand on the shores of the Dartmouth Waterfront and stare accross the Harbour and know that every building you see on the Halifax waterfront had our dad's s hands to help build them. Take a stroll down Fishemans's Cove and know that Vernon Kane helped to build a place that has seen many tourists, locals and peaceful walks. He is leaving behind a history of structures that will stand for generations to come.

Vernon loved his home and took great pride in gardening and upkeep of his homestead. When dad wasn't working he could be found enjoying the great outdoors, indulging in his lifelong love of fishing and hunting. Whether it was casting a line into a peaceful lake or river or trekking through the woods in search of the perfect deer, the outdoors was where he found solace and joy. The relationships he forged during these years were unbreakable. Hunting with his best friend Norman, his brothers or nephews gave us some of the best stories we could ever imagine, from the best storyteller ever. He cherished every moment spent in nature, passing down his passion and skills to younger men in his family and community.

Above all, Vernon was a family man. His love for his family was unwavering, and he cherished every moment spent with those he loved. Being in East Preston with his brothers and sister Vola was his most favourite thing to do. He was a pillar of strength, a source of wisdom, and a guiding light for all who knew him. Dad loved a good arguement and his family was happy to give him one. It is the thing that will be missed the most. Dad's most wonderful trait was his love of laughter. If you could make dad laugh you were in his circl for life.

Vernon is survived by children Joni Taylor, Ohio; Carl Kane, Halifax; Rolanda Kane, Halifax; Samuel Thomas (Samantha), Sackville; Denise Kane, Tracy Osbourne, Dartmouth and Tina Kane, Cole Harbour.
