Obituary of Jeanette Denton

Please share a memory of Jeanette to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Reta "Jeanette" (O'Brien) Denton, born June 30, 1922, in Port Maitland, Yarmouth County, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2017, in Wolfville at the age of 95. She was the daughter of Warren Thomas and Anna Lorenda (Goudey) O'Brien.

Mum graduated from Yarmouth County Academy, and attended Acadia University, graduating with a B.A. in 1942 and B. Ed. in 1943. She taught school in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and in Montreal, Quebec. She moved to Wolfville in 1951 with husband, Dr. G. Douglas Denton.

She was an active volunteer with several groups, particularly the EKM Health (Hospital) Auxillary, serving two terms as President, Girl Guides of Canada, Wolfville-Kings County, as a Captain and Division and area Commissioner, and for several years with the Wolfville Historical Society. Mum was an avid fan of the Acadia University Men's Basketball Axemen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. G. Douglas Denton, and brother, Stanley E. O'Brien.

Surviving are her four children; son Richard (Karly), Wolfville; daughters Nancy (Warren), Lumsden Dam, Peggy (David), Chester, and Janet, Wolfville; grandchildren, Anna, Josh, Stephen, (Amanda), Beth (John), Adam, Erin (Duc), step-grandchildren Jennifer, and Jillian (Guillo); great-grandchildren, Ben, Kaylee, Lucas, Lauren, Joaquin, Danilo, Evelyn, and Benjamin; sister-in-law Louise O'Brien, nephews Michael and Tommy, and niece Cheryl.

We would like to thank Dr. Roger Hamilton for his care of Mum over the years, and to extend a very special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at the Wolfville Nursing Home where Mum resided the past two years. Even though Mum had limitations with hearing and sight, she remained a very caring lady and loving mother.

There will be a visitation on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Wolfville Funeral Chapel. A private interment service will take place at a later date in Little River, Digby Co. Donations may be made in Mum's memory to a Charity of One's Choice.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Wolfville Funeral Chapel, 568 Main Street Wolfville (902-542-4656).

We would like to include the following quote that Mum shared with us, from George Bernard Shaw, entitled A Variation of Faith:

"I have a cathedral within my heart. My joy and religion is in planting a seed and seeing a flower grow. It's in listening to the birds sing. It's based on Nature. I think I respect Mother Nature more than anything else in this World. That's my religion."
