Obituary of Helen Winnifred Morse

Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Helen Winnifred Morse, 92 of Kentville, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019, in her home.  Born in Port Williams on November 12, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Avard Rachford Morse, retired Dominion Atlantic Railway Conductor, and Leah Rawding Morse.

Helen lived almost all of her life in Kentville, in the same house where she grew up on Leverett Avenue. She graduated from K.C.A. with the Governor General’s Medal in 1944, then trained as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at the Pathology Institute, Halifax, and Dalhousie University. She worked at Newton Wellesley Hospital, Mass. from 1947 – 1949; and in Kentville from 1950 – 1975 at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium and 1975 – 1986 at the Miller Hospital.  She retired as head of the laboratory at the Miller on August 31, 1986.

Helen was a member of the Kentville United Baptist Church, acting as Choir Secretary-Treasurer from 1960-2001.  She enjoyed travelling the world, and was a member of the Nova Scotia Globe Trotters since 1989.

She was a wonderful gardener and her garden was visited and admired by many every summer.

Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her aunt, Beatrice Rawding Seamone, and cousins Mildred Strayhorn, Helen Strayhorn-Connelley, Edith Strayhorn-Mieras, Burt Rawding, all of Massachusetts, and Ross Morse Witter, Somerset NS.

Sincere thanks to Dr Crystal Todd for her compassionate support, and to Helen’s caregivers for their wonderful care, particularly those who were with her for many years, including Catherine Dowe, Della Jacobs, Harriett Cox, Donna Jamieson, and Dianna White.
