It was with great sadness that I read of Mr. Bower's passing.
Like countless others, Mr. Bower was my gym teacher from Grade Primary at Grosvenor Wentworth, until he retired while I was in junior high at Park West School. It's taken me a while to write this condolence because I couldn't find the right words to express what a wonderful teacher Mr. Bower and just how much he was loved by his students. He was exactly what every kid hoped for -- always a smile and a laugh, so warm and welcoming, and always interested in what we were doing and encouraging us. I have so many happy memories of his classes, and so many important ones as well. When my older sister, who had asthma, decided she wanted to run cross country one year like the rest of the kids, he didn't tell her she couldn't do it but supported her and in the process showed me that I could overcome any obstacle that life might present. More simply, he brought so much fun into my childhood -- from ski trips to trampoline days, kick the can to field days, I can't imagine having a better gym teacher. Now nearly 30, I still love to be outdoors and to be active, whether it's running or recreational sports or simply being outside. I like to think he started that love of physical activity early on, and I really feel like it's brought a lot of happiness into my life as an adult as well.
My thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Mr. Bower.

Dear Shirley
I am very sad to learn of Wally's death. I look forward to seeing both of you in Lunenburg each summer, and was sad to hear why you were missing. I know you have close family and friends to support you, but I can't imagine how hard this must be. I also can't imagine the two of you, one without the other. When we were in Teachers College you were together, and that was a long time ago! Then, what a great surprise it was to find Wally was to be my children's elementary school gym teacher some years later! We moved to Rockingham around 1992. Our lives have touched meaningfully on and off over the decades, making my life richer. So I do hope to see you again. I want you to know you have both been on my mind all year - since I heard Wally had a potentially serious problem. I am sending you a hug and caring thoughts.

It was my extreme pleasure as a fellow physical educator to have known him for over 30 years! Always smiling and very congenial we had many conversations about our profession or sports.
He will be missed but the thoughts of the loving times you shared together will help you through these periods of grief.

Mr Bower was my gym teacher from grade 2 at Grosvenor until grade 9 at park west school, he was a great teacher and was by far the best gym teacher ever. He played games with us that he personally made up and we loved every minute of it as kids. RIP Mr B one of the great ones!

Dear Shirley and Family,
I was saddened to hear of Wally’s passing while we were in Denmark visiting our daughter and her family. While I knew of his illness, it is always a shock to lose someone you liked and admired. I so enjoyed my time with him Curling both in competition and just at the club’s regular draws. His positive attitude and great sense of humour will always remain in my mind. My and Muffy’s deepest sympathies and prayers go out to you and the family.
Sincerely,
Ray and Muffy

I may not be able to attend the service today as I am under some meds in preparation for a procedure tomorrow and may be indesposed. Dear Shirley and family,
Lorraine and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Wally’s passing. He was my close friend for so many of our teaching years at Rockingham School. We unfortunately lost touch as the years passed. Wally was truly one of the best. Not just as a wonderful teacher ( the kids absolutely loved Phy Ed class ) but as the person you would want as a close friend. I was so fortunate to be a part of his life for many years. We had such fun together. Shooting hoops in the gym to travels to Montreal with another good friend, Artie Horne. Those years I’ll never forget. His obituary says it all. He often spoke of his children with such pride. And everything with Wally was about family. And yes. We had many laughs because Wally truly enjoyed a good joke. He was so full of life. Rest In Peace dear friend. Shirley, Lorraine and I can only offer our hope that happy memories will replace sadness.

So sad to hear of Wally’s passing. Wally taught at Park West school when I was there. He was a well respected, kind physical education teacher. It seems like just yesterday he was standing at the end of the school’s driveway waving good morning to us when he retired. He had his skis in hand and was off to hit the slopes! Wally, you will be missed.

Shirley and all family members,
I was shocked and saddened to have read about Wally’s death. I met him at NSTC in one of the Phys. Ed. classes and quickly became aware that he was not only a good athlete, but he was such a nice guy. Wally always addressed me, whether it was at TC or whenever we met during our teaching careers, with the same phrase. Hello Dot Doyle ! My sincerest condolences to all.

To Mr Bower's family, I offer my deepest condolences for your loss. He was a nice and good-natured teacher; always even-tempered and fair in his decisions, while gently enforcing the rules. He was very deserving of respect (and, I hope it's OK to add, the way he would whistle through his teeth was magical!).
Thank you, Mr Bower, for your guidance through all the years at Rockingham School. You will be missed.

To Wally's family - I had the privilege of working with Wally when I was the secretary at Inglis Street Elementary (formerly St. Francis School). Wally and I had many a chat on his days there. He will be missed by all who knew him.
I could not help but notice that Wally passed away on the last day of this school year - how ironic. God Bless!
