I have so many wonderful memories of Gordon from the summers we spent at Canoe Lake. One, in particular, was the time we planted our garden, it started growing and a rabbit decided to eat the greens, especially the beet greens, my favourite. Albert was out fishing and my Mom came to spend time with me. I tried putting moth balls in the beet greens, but he ate over them, I tried pinwheels without any luck as every evening he ate a few more feet of the beet greens, leaving the rest alone. I even put a radio in the garden with a long cord to the house, covered it with plastic, turned it on, but more greens disappeared. Gordon told me he had the solution, his gun. Mom and I went out one evening leaving Gordon on the deck overlooking the garden with his gun across his knees. Later, when we arrived home, Gordon put his gun in the case looked at me and told me that I had nothing more to worry about as the rabbit was gone and hadn't come to the garden. As we stood there we watched the rabbit hop out of the woods, cross the lawn and go into the garden. Albert put up a fence when he got home.
