Doris Aileen Conrad (nee Ouderkirk) of Halifax, formerly of Tantallon, passed away Tuesday December 31, 2019 in the Halifax Infirmary Hospital with loved ones by her side.

Beloved wife of the late Merle D. Conrad, she was born in Berwick, Ontario. Loved mother of Catherine Sutherland (Edward) and adored grandmother of Melanie (Allen) and Teddy (Carla). Dear sister to Oscar Ouderkirk (Lois), Lois Hawke, Eleanor St. Pierre, Rita Dingwall (Eldred), Sandra Cavan (Mike) and John Ouderkirk (Cathy). Sadly, she will be missed by her great-grandchildren Lauren, Evan, Rowan and Emmett. She will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who shared many loving memories. Also lovingly remembered by her best friends Georgina and Herman Rawding and their children Dawne (appointed Goddaughter), Lynn and Gary.

Predeceased by parents Fred and Birtie (Murphy) Ouderkirk; two brothers Douglas and Jackie and five sisters Sheila Hume, Erma Pettit, Fairley Thompson, Audrey Whitman and Valerie Ouderkirk.

Doris was passionate about her family, friends, home, her flower garden, church and work. She enjoyed her friends from William Black Church and their kindness, always making sure she could attend services. She especially enjoyed her visits from Bill and Muriel Hale while in her new home in Aberdeen Building in Parkland, Clayton Park where she has resided for almost the past two years. There she blossomed again enjoying all her new friends and amazing caring staff. She attended exercise classes, daily activities, concerts and Monday night bridge games.

Doris had a long and successful career with the Federal Government of Canada. It started in Liverpool in 1956 with the Unemployment Insurance Commission as a casual Claims and Employment Officer and after moving to Halifax she eventually applied and started working for CPP and Old Age Security. She was the Area Comptroller for the Atlantic Region of Income Security Programs, Human Resources Development Government of Canada when she retired. Upon retirement she then did consulting services for the Office of the Commissioner of Review Tribunals, Canada Pension Plan/Old Age Security until 2004 at the age of 74.

To honour Doris’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 31, 2020 at 2:00 pm at William Black Memorial United Church, 10515 Peggy’s Cove Road, Glen Margaret. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Halifax or to William Black Memorial Church would be appreciated by the family. Burial will take place at a later date during a private family service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4P 1B9 (902-679-2822).
