Coach Laing was my Basketball Coach at West Kings District High Schhoo from 1966 -1970. He influenced me in more ways than just basketball. I just learned of his passing today and was extremely saddened. May his Family know that this Man was a major force in the Man I have become.
REST IN PEACE,COACH……and forever Thankyou.

He was my basketball coach from 1972 to 1976. He was more than a teacher. He really cared about his students and his players, encouraging them to strive to better themselves, both on and off the court. He even went as far as offering to help me pay for some of my university tuition at a time when I was struggling financially. Like many others, I thought of him as my "school father" and I still think of him as the most positive influential person in my life outside of my parents. I'm sure he impacted dozens if not hundreds of his students and players in the same way. An ideal coach, teacher and friend. It's been nearly 45 years since I graduated from West Kings and I still think of him fondly.

Clary was my physical education teacher when I started school at West Kings in 1973. He fulfilled this role for a few subsequent years plus taught one course on sex education ( I still can remember the snickering in the class). I then started playing junior basketball and Clary was the coach. He was also a presence in my life for summer basketball camps and the senior basketball team in 1977 and 1978. In which, for both years, we finished 3rd in the province for large schools. Our success was all due to the structure Clary put in place, as we had limited talent.
My last interaction with Clary was when I helped him coach the West Kings junior basketball team in the early 80s. We won most games when he was there and lost most of them when he wasn't available.
It is clear that Clary had a lasting impact on thousands of students and a deeper impact on hundreds of boys/young men that played basketball at West Kings.
My sincere condolences to Jean and family.

My sincere condolences to Mrs Laing, Andrew, Kara, and John Keith.
I was remembering Mr Laing only recently, as I have many times over the years, since he taught me from 1980 to 1983 at West Kings. He was top of my list among many very good teachers. He was interesting, caring, and an honourable man. I appreciated the personal anecdotes he would share - and one in particular about his being 'thrust' into teaching at such a young age. It seemed to cause him to shudder at how he survived it!
Proverbs 22:1: A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
Warmest wishes to the Laing family.

Dear Jean, Andrew, Kara and Mark,
Please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences for your loss. Clary was an outstanding man whose sustained commitment to teaching and coaching impacted many of us in profoundly positive ways.
As a coach, he was a demanding and highly competitive man, but he was a pillar of strength who taught many of us how to be unselfishly committed to a higher goal. His expectations started with a clear understanding that those on his team would be solid students, good citizens, humble, and highly committed as players. Although anyone who ever attended a WKDHS basketball game quickly realized that he had an intensely competitive spirit, what they didn't see were the many hundreds of hours he spent carefully coaching and mentoring us as individuals and looking after the team. He counselled us after every loss with words of support and optimism, reinforcing his commitment to each of us and he cautioned us after every win not to lose our humility. For him, it wasn't just about winning. It was more important to him that we committed, that we gave unselfishly as individuals, and that we learned from our experiences in our collective effort to succeed.
That meant that our long and frequent practices, our many team trips, and our highly intense game experiences all conspired to serve up life lessons that most of us have never forgotten. So even though I was at WKDHS almost 40 years ago, I was saddened by this news and I am truly sorry for your loss. He was a giant of a man who will be remembered by many of us for his commitment to us (as individuals), his affable and caring spirit, and for his generosity.

Dear Jean, Mark, Andrew and Kara,
Even though we moved from Green Acres when I was only 6 years old, I remember Clary well. I remember the greenhouses, swimming in the pool, watching one of the high school basketball games when he was a coach and listening to him play "A Daisy a Day" on the organ. I don't think that there was anything that he couldn't do. He definitely lived a full life contributing to church, school and community but of course nothing could compare his marriage that stood the test of time and having such a lovely family. My condolences to you all.
Sincerely,
Susan

Dear jean and family
I started a note this am and think I lost it but if this is a duplicate forgive me.
I’m am sending condolences on behalf of my mother, Mildred Whidden but also from me.
Over the years I have often heard the names “ clary and Jean” spoken with such fond memories from both of my parents. When mum heard about clary’s death she was very upset. I wish thwt she could write to you herself because she would have so many stories to share. However, she is almost totally blind and you likely know that she is in a nursing home near Stellarton. Her mind is as sharp as ever and so her sympathy is heartfelt and very sincere.
We will pray for your peace and future blessings as you carry on without clary.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family upon Mr. (aka "Coach") Laing's passing. I was fortunate to play for Coach at WKDHS during the early 1970s. He taught me much more than the game of basketball - although I didn't realize it at the time. I learned about perseverance, hard work, determination, integrity, and how to be a team player. There was no "I" or "me" in team for Clary or for any one who wanted to play the great game of basketball.
I also was lucky enough to sing with him on the rare occasion of visiting home and attending church services as a stand in choristers. Clary was my good high school friend Mark's Dad as well, and I wish for him and Gail healing and the knowledge that a father's love is forever and always. RIP, Coach - thanks for putting me on your team.
