Dear Betty, Balon, Glen and Keera,
I have lost my best friend, mentor, marine scientist and all around good guy to be around with.

Dear Batty, Balon Glen and Keera
Hard to start when I think of my brother, Dale. He was a bother, friend, fellow scientist, and someone who has made a mark in life. Sometimes that was research on a sunken oil tanker anywhere in the world, lectures to Chinese scientists in China, mapping Halifax harbor bottom sediments for heavy metals or mapping river estuaries. Then there was hand ball, golf, curling and designing the back yard as a place for Bar BQ's and a quiet beer and hosting who ever came along.
Dale has left his mark in the world with well over 200 publications at BIO, and yes 5 hole in one on the golf course and research on Moon rocks who brought him back some moon samples, Who else has talents and interests in so many fields. Rest in Peace good and valuable servant.
Brother Ron..

Thinking of you all now upon hearing this sad news. I very fondly remember your visits to Black River Lake in the summers where you all became honorable "Black River Bums" along side the rest of us kids. Take care, and please know you're in our thoughts.

Sorry to hear about Dale's passing. We moved into the Lumsden house after your family moved out. I cannot help but remark that a student in the Newtonville School went on to achieve a PhD.

Recently reading the obit. of Dale in the newspaper brought back many memories of elementary school life at the old one room school house at Newtonville in the late 1940's - early '50's, with the very patient teacher... Mrs. Westcott.
Also, remembering one of the favourite cats in my life "Rusty", came as a kitten from the Buckley home back in that era.
My condolences to the family, sincerely,
Margaret (nee Leopold) Knowles

It's hard to believe he is gone, and I am not sure it will ever really sink in. I will miss him dearly. I feel so lucky to have had such a wonderful father growing up who introduced me to so many things, like the love of travel, golf, handball, and margaritas! (at least when I was a bit older).
It would be remiss not to mention how he liked to brag about the 5 holes in ones he achieved. Not many people are able to make that claim.
Dad will leave a hole in our hearts forever and we will raise a glass to toast him all together when we return to Nova Scotia.
With Love,
Keera and Arne

I have such great memories of Dale. When we were young and "from away", Dale and Betty welcomed us into their family with open arms. Dale was a wonderful father, friend, and mentor. He was always interested in what you had to say and gave you his fullest attention. Though I hadn't seen him for many years, I often thought of him with great fondness.

I think I can safely say on behalf of all the Beluga Award winners, Dale's creation of this honour was one of the greatest non-scientific accomplishment of his career at BIO. I am sure it will stand as a legacy to his memory for future generations of BIO staff.

I was saddened to hear of Dale's passing.
It has been a long time since I last saw and spoke with him but I have only great memories of our younger years.
Dale and his brother Ron were a big influence on me to the extent I followed them in the field of Geoscience.
He has indeed left a legacy in his field of specialty.
God Bless

I never had the pleasure of working with Dale on a research project, however I did get to know him through the sharing of countless lunch and coffee breaks at BIO. Two of the things that I remember about Dale are his professionalism and his sense of humour: while he was thorough and meticulous in the pursuit of his investigations, he was not one to take himself too seriously, and he was always ready to share a laugh. Quick to recognize the achievements of his co-workers, he organized events that shone a spotlight on those individuals, and ensured that their accomplishments were appreciated by staffers and friends of BIO. Dale’s involvement in the establishment of the BIO Oceans Association was a testament to his sense of collegiality: it reflected his perception that his fellow researchers, whether active or retired, would benefit from a forum that catered to their social and professional interests. Betty and his children can take comfort in knowing that Dale
will long be remembered for his contributions to the advancement of marine science at BIO, and for his influence in promoting a sense of community within and beyond the walls of the Institute.

Betty - my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Dale holds a very special place in my heart. He introduced me to “the greatest job in the world” when I was his summer student (almost 40 years ago!). He provided encouragement and guidance during my subsequent Ph.D. in oceanography and was a role model for me throughout my research and science management career at BIO. He was a kind and considerate man who brought out the best in people. We shared a love of science for the the public good and the BIO team spirit. One of my most cherished memories is having Dale at my Beluga Award ceremony - the award he so proudly created is a great legacy of a great man. My sincere condolences.

It is with much sadness to hear of Dale’s passing. I have known Dale since 1969 when I joined marine geology at BIO. I had worked with and for Dale during our working careers at the institute and Have very fond memories of our golf trips to various places and the many trips we made with handball over the years. Unfortunately after retirement we all go on our separate ways but my memory of Dale always stayed with me. My heart felt condolences go out to Betty and family.
