Obituary of Mary Elizabeth MacIntosh

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Elizabeth MacIntosh, 83 of Annapolis Royal, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020 in the Digby General Hospital.  Born on August 7, 1936, in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Harold C. and Edith (DeGeer) Atkinson.

Mary was raised in St. George and Saint John, New Brunswick. She studied at Mount Allison University where she met her future husband Rev. James MacIntosh. Together they served in pastoral charges in Noel, NS and Alberton, PE. After James became a military chaplain, the family lived at several military bases. Retiring from military life in 1983, Mary and Jim moved to Annapolis Royal where she owned and operated a flower shop and he served as minister of Saint George & Saint Andrew United Church.

Mary loved Annapolis Royal and made many friends. She also loved vacationing in Dundee, Cape Breton, where they had a cottage on the farm where Jim had grown up and where they were surrounded by his large family.

Her memory will be cherished by daughters Amy Moonshadow of Halifax; Heather Rice of Bridgetown; son Ross (Heather) of Mermaid, PE; grandchildren David & Scott MacIntosh; brother Michael (Valerie) Atkinson, Boundry Creek, NB; sisters-in-law Flora Bissett of Cole Harbour, and Mary Russo of Conway, NH; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mary was predeceased by her parents and by Jim, her beloved husband of 56 years; her sister Jane Atkinson.

Family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Hancock in Annapolis Royal, the Mid-Valley Palliative Care service, the VON, the doctors & staff at Digby General Hospital, Valley Regional Hospital, the Dixon Centre at the QEHII Hospital, and all her wonderful friends and neighbours.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be scheduled at Saint George & Saint Andrew United Church, Annapolis Royal, when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. Burial will also take place at a later date in Black River United Church Cemetery, Dundee, Cape Breton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4P 1B9 (902-679-2822).
