Obituary of Robert Allan Fitch
Robert Allan “Al” Fitch
September 9th, 1958 - May 29th, 2020
It is with great sorrow that we announce that Allan Fitch passed away on Friday morning in the company of his family, due to complications from surgery. Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, to Muriel (Dixon) and Robert Fitch, Al grew up in a supportive environment and began an ever-growing commitment to the world of music, beginning with pots and pans! He became a professional drummer and percussionist early on in his life and always continued to study, learn and listen.
Al had a passionate, creative, and gentle soul. He was a kind man who protected the people he cared about. He stood up for what mattered to him. Al had a zest for his life-long journey as a joyful student, a consummate musician and a patient, talented and caring teacher. He was a sought-after sideman and session player for many bands, groups and singers throughout his long career, including “99 Lives”, “Rhythm Method”, and “The Centennial Dixieland Jazz Band”. He was currently the drummer for “Ruth Manning and the Prospectors” and for “Bluesmobile”. Al also played on Frank Spinney’s recent recording sessions. He had a special love for jazz and enjoyed his times in Truro at Roadside Willie’s, playing with Paul Barrett’s jazz ensemble.
Al cherished his memories and he loved life, his family, and his friends. He loved to read, he enjoyed people and a good chat. He was always upbeat and looking for a way to bring a smile to someone’s face. He had a wealth of knowledge and a joy in sharing ideas, stories and music that he particularly admired.
Al was a talented woodworker, having been involved in many projects throughout his years. He helped build complete houses and finished many major renovations, but fine cabinetry was his favourite. He collaborated on many of these projects with his longtime friend, Rod Cann, who was like a brother to him. Al leaves behind many unfinished projects.
Most importantly, Al was a loving and giving father. He always had time for his children and many hours were spent discussing movies, music, cooking, history, books, and carpentry. The wonderful memories are too many to count. His comforting presence will be forever missed.
Al was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Muriel; uncles George, Frank and Allan; aunts Stella, Eleanor and Maxine. He became the primary caregiver of his parents in the last years of their lives.
Al is lovingly remembered by his children, Naomi (Josh) Bacon and Jacob Duboy-Fitch (Eden Tertsakian); his partner, best friend and kindred spirit, Kim Bishop; Aunt Jean Dixon; Uncle Arthur (Vera) Fitch; as well as the mother of his children, Wendy Duboy, many cousins, friends, bandmates and students.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, great music and a passion for life. He will always be in our hearts and will be sorely missed by so many.
There will be a celebration of Al’s life when it is safe to gather together again. Cremation has taken place. In Al’s memory, donations may be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4P 1B9 (902-679-2822).
