Lewis it is always sad to loose such a close and wonderful person as your dad. Having known him since childhood I know what a loss this community feels. I'm sure much of what kept him going was the care and attention paid to him by you. I'm sure fond memories shall bring peace, but I'm sure a smile from time to time. On behalf of Rob Stirling and all his family I express our sincere condolences, Bless you all. Mac

Hi cousins ,
It was sad to hear of Harold's passing, sounds like it was a blessing though .
Now he is with loved ones who passed before him .
He was such a great man and uncle . I remember going with him on his milk run and eating donuts and drinking chocolate milk too . I can't have donuts and chocolate milk without thinking of him .Also I think back to the time he took us for a drive in an old jeep ...might have been Don's jeep but Harold was the one who drove it.
He and Greta were so important to our little family in the old days . Mum depended on them a lot.
While at Acadia i visited them a few times and it was like being at home.
Going to miss you Harold

Uncle Harold and Aunt Greta loved their family, and it was very evident that they loved and appreciated them. I was greatly appreciative of Uncle Harold and Aunt Bell for their love and kindness to Dad and Mom in their later years. Uncle Harold will always be remembered by those who love him, and I loved and will truly miss him. "A life well-lived is a lasting inspiration!" Love and hugs to the family!

Dear Luke & Family ,
I just wanted to say how sorry I am to see that your Gramdfather passed . I have great memories of your Grandfather from back when I worked for Dave Miller at the Irving in Greenwich , your Grandfather was always very polite and always up for a chat when he was in and I also remember all the times you would see him doing something for the Village of Port William's. He was always so great at keeping the pond cleared off in the winter so everyone could skate or play some hockey. I will be thinking of you amd your family in the days ahead Luke , your family has not only lost a father a husband and Grandfather but Port William's has lost a Pillar of their Community. RIP Mr. Benedict

Lewis..
Saddened to learn of your fathers’ passing. My Dad would speak of the times he would go down to your shop to give your Dad a hand in cutting and splitting wood. (My Mom would say Dad would be gone for hours!) I am sure they had some great chats and probably together solved some of the worlds’ problems or at least those of the Ports’! For sure, Dad enjoyed spending the time with him!
On behalf of my Dad, John and my Mom, Mona and our family, I extend our condolences as you and your family remember your Dad. We will all miss seeing him on his porch.

I first met Harold when a few friends of mine and I decided it was about time for a park to be built in Port Williams. I know how much work he put into creating a park that will leave fond memories for years to come. I’ve pushed my three children on the tire swing donated in Greta’s name. I often saw Harold on his porch when I drove by, while I was rushing one of my children to or from some activity. I finally had the opportunity one day when I had some alone time to stop in. It is a day I will never forget. We had a wonderful chat and before I left, I got a great hug. Later on, my daughter and I stopped by for a chat after one of her soccer games and he made sure we got a cucumber from his garden. My boys and I stopped by another time for stories and tomatoes. I drive by Harold’s house every other Sunday to drop my children off with their father. Every time we drive by when the weather is good, we look to see if Harold is out so we can wave to him. His presence in the Port will certainly be missed. - Love, Wendy, Leah, Dylan and Ryan

Dear Benedict Family: My sincerest condolences to your family. Sitting here in my office, I am looking at the photo of the men from the Acadia Dairy back in 1948 hanging on the wall. Daddy and Harold are standing side by side with their horses and milk wagons. As Daddy use to say we were just two young fella`s that knew how to hand a horse and wagon. Daddy would have been 24 and Harold would be around 19 or 20. So cute that you noted his age as 93 3/4. Maybe they`ll get the chance to do a little reminiscing when they meet up again. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Regards to the family.

I never knew Harold but have heard my Mum & Dad speak of him. He was my Dad's first cousin. My grandfather was Ralph Benedict from Falmouth. I did not know any of Uncle Russel's family. My Mum worked for Uncle Russel when Aunt Emily was so sick. She done the housework and looked after the children. My Dad's name is Gordon and Mum was Vivian (Crossley) She always spoke highly of the family. She was very young when she worked there and often told us how the children would play tricks on her. haha
Mum and Dad are both gone now and we do miss them dearly, but I would not wish them back with their health problems and the Covid 19 virus taking over.
As I read the obituary online of your Dad, I thought to myself...he was like all of the Benedicts that I knew. A hard working man with a kind heart for others especially kids. May he rest in peace!

So sorry to hear of Uncle Harold’s passing but I know he is at peace now. He was a wonderful man and always a joy to be with. He and Aunt Greta would light up any room they walked through with those beautiful smiles and was loved by all. Uncle Harold was a hard worker during his lifetime and could be seen often in the woodpile or over to Lewis’ s shop lending a hand. Working in the community on many projects was also a love of his. He will be missed by all who knew him. Heaven has just gained another beautiful angel and I’m sure he his telling his heavenly family the news on earth. We will miss you Uncle Harold. There could be no better neighbour! Harold and I were neighbours twice. As one of five young girls renting a house on a shoestring budget on Highland Ave, I often had to make the call that we’d run out of oil. Harold would chastise us for not watching the gage but he faithfully came and bled the tank. When he and Greta moved next door, I was afraid he’d remember me as one of those irresponsible kids but my transgressions had long been forgotten. When my Mom died, one of the few things I wanted from my family home was Dad’s rhubarb. Harold already had enough to feed the whole community but he allowed me to add mine to his patch. On stormy days, I usually cooked or baked and trekked it through the snow to his place. Once, when the power was out, I took over a pot of stew and cooked it on the wood stove in his basement. It was so hot, it burnt right in the pot but we sat down and ate it anyway! There were many great visits on the porch, too, and when my house sold, Harold was one of the only people I told. Saying good-bye to him (and then telling Lew about it later) were the only tears I shed. He certainly earned his way to Heaven where I expect he is sitting beside Greta enjoying a big piece of coconut cream pie!

I remember the first time I met Uncle Harold, it was at the Irving Oil Office on River Street and he invited us out to the lake.....as kids it seemed like it was way out in no man's land and took forever to get there! Uncle Harold and Greta opened their arms with hugs and were so glad we came out. We always wanted to go visit them.
In recent years, I tried to visit when I could but would always ask Terry ( who works for LRB) how Uncle Harold was doing.
Rest in peace Uncle Harold, now you can hold Greta's hand!

Nice to see all the information re Uncle Harold. I remember the milk wagon
and the horse..We had fun times with Uncle Harold and Greta..
especially when playing board hockey and other games.
I always thought that my Dad and Uncle Harold were cut from the same
wood. They both spent a lot of time doing things for others most of their
lives, just because...
He is in a better place now and probably has already checked in with
Dad to get the lay of the land and digging in trying to make things happen
for everybody’s good.
Love to the ones left behind...for now!

Uncle Harold was a "gem". He was strong in many ways .... Cared about people, loved his family, a hard worker and was community. He was always busy with a project of some sort.
Uncle Harold was a role model for the rest of us to try and emulate. When he and Aunt Greta walked into a room, smiles and laughter followed. They were a terrific couple and they lit up the room.
I am so glad that the four children, adults now, we're able to keep him at his home. That is where he was most comfortable and happy. Bless them! All the Benedict families and community will miss him. He was special.

Harold would tell me about things he did and saw in his life Harold was the hardest working man I ever new and if he liked you you new it and if he did not like you you new that to. I liked talking with him over the years and had a great deal of respect for him. I new this day was coming but it still hurts a lot as Harold was one of good ones.
