I moved to Duncans Cove when I was 19 and stayed in 307 with my Dad. I thought Tom was the most interesting person I had ever met and I loved every chance I got to be in his company. He gave me a chance to do some work for him and It always made me feel proud to do something useful for a man like him. Rest in peace.

So many good memories of Tom - always welcoming, jovial, kind and bright with new ideas. A deep soul - when I attended a concert with him in the 80's (Bev was on stage) I was moved by the tears in his eyes, becuse he loved music so much. A few visits to the farm in PEI were warmly welcomed and great fun!
The City of Halifax also has some excellent overhead photos of its parks taken from Tom's airplane, while he generously toured me through the skies to help me on my asignment from the Planning Department.
My most sincere thanks and condolences to his family who will miss his presence and inspiration the most.

I'll never forget meeting Tom and family. It was our first night in Halifax, moving from Montreal. searching around (after dark) for a place to camp in our van. We settled on a field a little out of town and went to sleep. Next morning along comes a gentleman in a volkswagon, wearing a red beret. "You're parking on my airfield!" he announces. Guess who? We tried to drive away but we stuck in mud. So Tom brought up his whole family, all the kids, and heaved us out. We adjourned to the Groves for a big breakfast and stayed a month, eating, playing music, having fun. When we found a house to buy Tom flew us over in his plane to inspect the property. I still live there, Those were just the first events of a long, happy friendship. Tom was a completely generous, vivid, creative person. He gave the very best freely to all. I cherish having know him and his family

We lived in Duncan’s Cove from 1992 - 1994 while Jerry, a YS naval officer, was on exchange with the Canadian Navy. Our son, Timothy, was born in Halifax and Duncan’s Cove was his first home. We were a long way from our families, but Tom and Bev made us feel like part of their family. We will never forget your kindness.

I want to send my deepest sincere condolences on Tom's passing. What an impact he has made on this community through his music, his generosity of character and his larger-than-life spirit!! My good fortune of getting to know Tom and Bev and of course John through my role as a music teacher at JL Ilsley back in the day has given me a lifelong friendship with the family that I will cherish forever. My thoughts are with the entire family at this time. God Bless Tom Grove

I met Tom in 1956, when I first joined the Halifax Symphony (as it was by then called). Not long after, he asked me to be his assistant: he was not only Principal Bassoon, but Librarian and set-up man. Boy, did I learn a lot! Not only about practical things (he was that in spades), but about caring, about making things comfortable for people, and providing the conditions for the best music making. He was a wonderful boss and friend. When I came back from studies elsewhere, Tom invited me sailing on his whaler, and introduced me to Sabine, who became my wife and mother of our children. He loved to joke to Christopher that if it weren't for him, he (Chris) wouldn't be around. I left Halifax again, but always kept in touch - mostly in PEI in the summers, and had a very warm welcome back to Halifax from Tom and Bev when I returned. I now have the privilege of playing quartets with Bev, who defies age and still plays like the pro she has always been. Remarkable family!

Please accept my condolences on Toms’ passing. I first met Tom on a rather cold late afternoon in November of 2003. It was an early outing for Jan and I, and we were pretty cold and hungry. We had stopped in at the Groves and were invited in for for a lovely meal of fish, chard, and perhaps a few libations. I clearly remember Toms’ congeniality, his friendliness and his sharing of a few fascinating stories. Future visits were always enjoyed. I felt that Tom was sort of a “one of kind” sort of a guy. Again, Condolences to all.

I so sorry for your loss Bev. Visiting you and Tom over the years had a great impact on me. What a thrill it was to ride in his plane in P.E.I. The last time we were in the cove, I remember Tom getting up on the ladder to make some repairs to the lovely, warm home you both created. Playing in a quartet with you both is another fond memory. I’m so glad that Tom passed away at home. I’ll be thinking of you and your family.

Dear Bev and Family,
I am very sorry to hear of Tom's passing. We have many fond memories of time spent together. I remember being in Tom's plane once when I was fifteen years old. He suddenly told me that I was steering and for the very first time in my life, I froze in terror! Tom was quite amused by this and surprisingly, as he was so good natured, continued despite myself being ill in the back of that very small plane. My sister sitting next to me was far less amused. So thank you to Tom, yourself and the family for that and many other great memories. Our condolences.
What a wonderful life! Love and Hugs,

Dear Bev, Nancy, Cynthia, Carol, Doug and John,
Please accept our deep condolences on the loss of your wonderful, talented, generous and charismatic husband (father). I have so many fond memories of Tom over the years-never a dull moment- he always had something to tell you- or discuss with you or share with you.
One of my favorite memories is Tom asking me if I could do a roll in my kayak- in case I capsized. And as I couldn't- he always warned me to be careful as I had a young son at the time I lived there.
Tom would always include us in family events-so I benefitted from your large wonderful family get togethers. In fact- John and I even had our wedding at your house and it was followed by lovely recitals by anyone with any musical talent. I am sure many people were married there, and enjoyed your endless hospitality.
I also never left hungry from your house. You could visit any time and be welcomed. Tom was a true Renaissance man and will be missed for his humour , his insights and his welcoming spirit. Many thanks to you both, and lots of love.

I was so sorry to hear about Tom's death. Almost too many memories to list here! I am sorry to hear of Tom's passing. My memory of Tom is playing Copland's Appalachian Spring- 13 instrument version with him back sometime in the 90s. There is that one spot where the bassoon plays a long, soft, low B and I told Tom how much I loved that note on the instrument. It was performance time, we came up to that spot in the score, and Tom proceeded to play that low B with more gusto than Copland intended (okay, it was loud) but I was so happy. Whenever I hear the piece now I wait for it... wait for it... and then when I hear that low B I think of Tom every single time.

In 1968- 69 2 classmates and I had the good fortune to rent " the glass house " in Duncan's cove . This was the year we were interns and we used the house as an escape from our duties . This came about as one of us (Kelly Hyslop) was involved in treating John who had broken his leg and Kelly got to know Tom and the rest was history . My particular memory of Tom and Bev was to be in awe of their broad education ,courage ,and obvious love . I ,to this day ,had an education in Duncan's Cove which was as important to me as that which I attained at Dal Med School . They were unique as a couple and Tom was simply an extraordinary human being who left a significant impact on me . The ultimate Renaissance man ! Seemily he could do anything and was so very comfortable in his skin . RIP Tom

Remembering Tom Grove.
In thinking back 45 years I am struck by the impact Tom Grove had on my life as a young man. Partly because of how he and his family who were so kind, welcoming and generous, as well as a man whom early in life had learned to express his great artistic abilities in his music, and designing and building houses of Duncans Cove. The adventurous part of Tom also had its impacts, with flights in his self restored canvas covered piper cub, out over the ocean for close views of whale’s, or my first and only flying lesson halfway to PEI over the Northumberland Straight. ,Cheers to a courageous man with a zest for living, My sincere condolences to Bev, Nancy, Carol, Cynthia, John, Doug and their families.

All our love to you Bev, Carol, Cynthia-
Our family is saddened by the news of Tom’s passing. He was a special man, making life truly grand for himself and those around him. A chat with Tom was always tinged with humour, wisdom, and a knowing sparkle in his eye. His long life was no doubt full of stories that would exemplify his bravery, tenacity, creativity and caring. I will always treasure my memory of flying in that two-seater on a cold New Year’s Day morning. I have to say, I was both excited and wary when taking him up on the offer. After an exhilarating (terrifying) take-off and landing on that short, bumpy strip, he said “It’s always a good trip when you land in one piece!”. I fondly remember Christmases that were utterly magical. The candle-lit atmosphere, including those in the large pine tree that soared through two floors, children running about with music in the air, fires in the hearths and an unending bounty of food, transported us all to a place found only in storybooks. I will also cherish the recorder lessons Tom gave my young son Sanford in the piano room overlooking the cove. Lost only physically, pieces of Tom will always be part of who I am, for which I will always be grateful.
With all our love,
Greg Jones, Jane Donovan and Sanford Jones

So sorry for your loss, Bev.
Reading Tom’s obituary brought a smile to my face as I went down memory lane ..
Yes, he took me up in his plane. I was pretty nervous about it and when he turned off the engine (or did I just imagine that?) I was petrified.
I had the pleasure of sitting beside him in the Adult education band in the sax section. He was an incorrigible flirt (or did I just imagine that as well?).
His was a life well lived, like that orange tree growing in the middle of your house. (Or was that also my imagination?)
My memories of him will always be tinged with a bit of the supernatural....
